“Thanks for meeting me, Elizabeth,” says Mark, standing beside his car alone on a quiet subdivision street not far too from the town’s main road. “Sorry for calling you out of the blue like this. I just messaged Lin, and she should be here shortly.”

“Mark, is this about…?”

Mark nods in agreement. “Yeah… thanks to you, I finally have the courage to do what I’ve been meaning to do for a long, long time, but I was far too afraid to do it as I kept running away from my past. So while I still have this courage within me, I want to get this over with as soon as possible.”

Mark’s voice is cool and calm, but his legs are noticeably wobbling, and he is shaking, not unlike Elizabeth when she was walking through the dark forest. Seeing this, Elizabeth gently grabs his hand and holds onto it.

“I don’t know what will happen from here. But just know this, I am proud of you, Mark. Really, I am.”

“Th-thank you,” he manages to reply as his quivering body shakes even more.

A police car pulls up, and Lin, in uniform, steps out. “What’s going on? Why did you call for me during my shift?”

Mark’s breathing is unsteady, and his body shakes. “I’m… I’m here to turn myself in.”

Officer Lin approaches him further with her hands on her belt, “what is this about?”

“Well, half a decade or so ago, I illegally dumped a bunch of toxic waste from one of our father’s mines into the forest and…” He grips Elizabeth’s hand tightly. “I’m pretty sure doing so poisoned the water supply of a small town in the distance, which led to a number of people dying.”

Mark grits his teeth and winces. “Lin, I’m so sorry. I’m sorry I have been keeping this from you all this time. I should have come clean long ago. I was just too scared. But… but I want to make things right, right now. I’ll confess to everything and will go quietly. Just please don’t think any less of our father. He doesn’t know anything about this.

“I just wish I could see my brother one last time before I go to jail,” Mark says as he lets go of Elizabeth’s hand and offers his hands up to Lin to put cuffs on.

Lin looks her brother in the eye. “Mark, I believe I know which town you are talking about, and there were indeed a number of deaths reported due to contaminated water.” Mark winces at those words, his hands still out, ready to be cuffed.

“However,” continues Lin, “we did a thorough investigation into that incident, and if the town you are referring to is the same town, then I can say with complete certainty that you aren’t the one responsible for those deaths or why their town’s water supply was poisoned. Put your hands down. You aren’t going to jail.”

At those words, Mark’s legs give way, and he falls to the ground in shock.
